The beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama are well known for the beautiful soft white sand. It is so soft that cars often get stuck when they try to drive on it, like you can on other beaches. When I was a teenager (a long time ago) I had a 4-wheel drive Jeep and I made some spending money helping people get "unstuck". Susan and I have been fortunate enough to travel extensively and visit beaches all over the world, We have never seen sand of the quality we have here. I have read that there are some, but I've never seen it. Most of the world's beach sands are made from coral or volcanic action, which gives it a more coarse texture. After doing a little research, we have learned that the Alabama Gulf Coast sand comes from quartz that has washed down from the Appalachian Mountains over millions of years. So, who knows, next time you're enjoying the Alabama Gulf Coast beach, you are probably on quartz sand that came from the mountains!
